"Hill ... mixes hard facts with irreverent and often amusing detail ... Hill is never nasty even when the subject matter surely demands it ... Following on from his well-received 'Peterborough United - The Modern Era' he has produced another cert winner. And there's not many at London Road these days who can claim that." Peterborough Evening Telegraph.
PREFACE:
Matt Hill what would we do without people like Matt? Matt
has been a loyal supporter of Peterborough United over countless
seasons and if you want any facts or figures on Posh, then Matts
your man!
I was delighted to be invited to help launch Matts first
publication,
Peterborough United: The Modern Era, in 2001. It is, therefore,
an even greater privilege to be asked to write the Preface to
this second book. I shall enjoy reading Matts entries on
the 499 players he details who played between 1960 and the present
day and Im particularly looking forward to seeing what hes
written about the lads I played with from 1968 to 1981. Now, I
could tell you a tale or two about one or two players, but thats
another story . . .
Having played over 500 games for Posh, I was lucky enough to witness
some tremendous performances by some great players Freddie
Hill, a skilful midfielder who read the game well and had the
funniest dry wit that kept the changing rooms ringing with laughter;
my old pal, Jim Hall, and the inimitable John Cozens, two magnificent
centre forwards; Chris Turner, a tireless centre-half if ever
there was one, who I believe could and should have played at the
very highest level and who then returned to become Poshs
most successful manager; Jack Carmichael tough, uncompromising,
solid as a rock.
And then, later, King Kenny Charlery, an outstanding
centre-forward who is still scoring great goals today; Simon Davies
and Matthew Etherington, players with great futures who are a
credit to the Posh Youth Scheme.
We all have our favourites. Sit back and enjoy this fascinating
insight into the multitude of personalities and abilities that
make up Peterborough United: Whos Who?
And, if ever you meet up with Chris Turner, Jack Carmichael and
I on a Saturday night in Peterborough, feel free to enlighten
us on your favourite players and why.
